Have any of you folks ever been into one of these? Or could someone tell me what kind of resistance one should expect? It seems that it could be a little stiffer.

It probably was stiffer when it was made back in the '40's. There are guys who advertize in Hemmings Motor News who rebuild shocks.Be sure to visit;

Cory,
Be aware that the travel was quite short. Pump it a few times and see if it stiffens up any. The resistance is on the return, not the compression. Springers only have about 2 inches of working travel and most of the time only move about an inch or so. It is merely a damper to slow down spring oscillation so is not very stiff!

Cory,
to expound on the subject! They were poor at best when new. Many years ago i was in an old dealers ( a friend of mine) and found an NOS shock hanging in the rafters. Of course i wanted it right away! When i asked him about it his response was "well, we took them all off when new and threw them away because they were ****. But since you want it , it is going to cost you", well, he charged me 5 bucks and we were both happy!

Robbie,
Five bucks eh? Not bad!! I've got the ride control set-up on my pan now but in the pursuit of purity I thought I'd grab a shock. I'm scratching my head now though as that darn ride control is dialed in nicely and the front-end is smooth!!! Thanks again for the help!!!Cory Othen

Paul Friebus at American Cycle Fabrication told me that he can rebuild them. I don't think these come apart like what we are used to in a car or regular motorcycle shock. That is why a lot of guys pitched them when they were worn out and put a ride control on there. I can tell you the repop ones suck and leak ( messing up the fender on my 47 knuckle) so I try to get originals when I can find them reasonably priced and working.
