Tank ID

I've got a tank hanging on the bike shed wall that has had me scratching my head. Any ideas? At first I thought the tank mounts must have been bondo'd over. I guess the only way to really tell is to strip it down?

What does the backside look like? The left side tank for right hand shift ULs does not have a shift gate position but does have the bracket to carry the crossover mount.

I had a hunch you would ask about the other side. I went out and tore it off the wall for a look and here it is.....

Cory If you shine a good light inside you should be able to see evidence of emblems or shifter gate mount. It looks to be 1940 and up OHV.

Just stick you finger in the filler neck and you should be able to feel if there was a shift gate mounted to it.

Yup all kinds of reasonable ideas.... I'm going to have to admit that the ol' brain was turned off when I asked the question. Here's a couple shots... the inside one is a little fuzzy but I think it's safe to say it used to have a gate mount.

I am sure you will find evidence of emblem mounts too. Sadly most times when the mounts have been removed they dent in the tanks so there is room for bondo.

Ain't if funny what folks will do to a gas tank.... I'm trying to figure out how to approach this one and not lose the ultra neato sticker...

Its true the emblem mounts may be buggered, but the shift gate mounts are inset, and they probably just bondo'ed over them. Just have to dig it out, and clean the threads. I've used an electric solding iron to soften bondo, and then you can pick it out, time consuming, but saves you from doing more damage trying to get the stuff off/out.
