  • I guess I'm an "other"

I've been building a Shovel/Servi Trike. I got to fire it up last Sunday and took a maiden voyage around the yard. The only major problem that I had was the gearing. Way too high. I think if I could have mustered up a good roll, I could have done 50 mph in first gear.
This is how it was set-up. Cone Shovelhead motor, 22 tooth comp sprocket, Stock Shovel 4-speed clutch basket(I don't remember how many teeth are on there), 20 tooth sprocket on the trans, and 37 teeth in the Servi-car rear-end. Also I guess I should add that I'm running FL gears in the transmission (15x20).

If this will work here is a short vid of my ride.

I'm working to change the 20 tooth sprocket on the trans down to a custom made 18 tooth sprocket to see if that helps.

Any suggestions on how to get the gear ratios on this thing ridable? Am I moving in the right direction with the 18? Is that going to be enough?

The 37 tooth rear is whats causing the "problem" .(most) Shovelheads used 51 teeth in the rear.

There is nothing I can do about the 37 tooth sprocket in the axle. That is the only size available and the only size that will fit in there. I know I'm not the first person to put a BT 4-speed transmission in front of a Servi axle. There has to be a combination of drive gears that will work.

Also change the front sprocket to a custom 20 tooth.

Well I got the 18 tooth installed and took another spin around the yard. Big improvement, but would still need alittle more to be comfortable.

18 is as small on the transmission as I'm able to go. Even had to clearance some aluminum around the front half of the main seal area to get that to work. The axle is limited to the 37 tooth sprocket and as far as I know I can't change the gearing on the clutch basket.
So, I'm with you Chris a 20 up front should be just the ticket. It would also let me use this 80 link primary chain (accident order).

So, where can I get one for a spline shaft Shovel?

Buy an over the counter blank sprocket. That is one with a solid center, no hole. Put a well used H-D sprocket in the lathe and remove all the teeth. Put the new sproket in the lathe and bore out the center to press fit on the hub you have just created. Make sure it is running true then weld them together.

I managed the 18 tooth sprocket well enough. But I think building a double row sprocket is out of my range. Know of anyone selling them?
