I thought the conspiracy theory was that Harley-Davidson got the feds to crack down on the aftermarket industry because it was cutting into their bottom line.

This thread went from discussing replacement shift rod ends or other small reproduction parts or components to selling Motorcycles with grafted frame heads with factory numbers which is definitely a no-no in any state I am aware of. I was more or less referring to using a wore out original brake rod or a correctly manufactured replacement, for safety. Motor and Transmission parts are wear items and if the factory stops making spares, people like Jim's or Andrews comes out with parts people like me use to overhaul or do mechanical restorations, back to the quality of OEM or better. There are Rip-off substandard parts out there, being imported for the uninformed to use at their own risk, and that is wrong also. Shelby

I will also have to reread the new Texas law on custom motor vehicles, but in Texas if you build a Replica 1932 Ford and it closely resembles said model it will be given a Texas Titled as a 1932 Ford. It is undefined in the courts if this applies to replica Motorcycles, but there is no problem using a Reproduction Replica 1942 frame with a motor with proper H-D title. 1970 and up must be titled by correct frame number, and their is a provision in the law for Motor numbers being transferred to replacement Motors, like 350 crate motors from GM.
Not trying to be an expert on this topic, but do believe several states have their own rules for Antique, Classic and Custom Motor vehicles Pre-1970 or even with short vin numbers (not Current Standard vin for late models)
"In Texas, an antique vehicle is defined as any motor vehicle that has at least a twenty-five year old body, frame and motor.
• The State defines a custom-built/assembled vehicle as any motor vehicle that has been reconstructed using three basic parts (body, frame, motor) and does not look like a known brand. Assembled vehicles are registered with the make as "assembled." The model year will be determined by the year of the body used to build the vehicle. A ‘Replica' is an assembled vehicle that uses manufactured prefabricated body and resembles a known brand." From Tex-dot website. Shelby

Dream on Shelby FEDERAL LAW..I am the Messinger,,to sell any vehicle with a reproduction frame it has to be retitled as new custom built construction title..Will not say Harley Davidson anywhere on this title
Have you noticed that original Knuck frames went from $3'500 to 9 or 10 grand [as I predicted]since I brought this to the attention of AMCA members a couple years ago at WaseonLast edited by duffeycycles; 12-22-2013, 03:12 PM.

I have no doubt your information is correct at federal level, but Texas has passed this law in 2011 signed by Gov. Rick Perry for the state of Texas only, a test of the States rights issue, Our State does not believe in total Federal control or overreach. This is also done to the manufacture of firearms in several states for use in those states not for export to other states. That is why I mentioned the Courts in what I stated. The test of Federal Law in States Rights issues is due to interstate vs, intrastate law and has not reached the Supreme Court yet.
In part of what I stated a custom frame vs. a replica frame, a custom frame still requires a Special Construction Title. A Replica frame that is True to look of original is allowed with original title for motor. Texas DoT or DPS is not happy with this law, but the Custom Car people are very happy. Good Texas Titles not on computer system for many years are in high demand. I am not trying to play lawyer here, my quote came from TexDot website, with Google search on Texas Vehicle Title.
I am sure this issue will continue and I prefer to use original frames in all I build. Shelby

You still can't sell it out of state--most local areas the DOT is unfamiliar with this law and will issue these titles
That also came from California Highway patrol....
Don't ride it in Daytona or Sturgis!
I don't think they have arrested anyone yet but as more people know about it they will--also from CHIPs
I was given the choice obey or be the first arrested!I obeyed

I said I was done talking, but thats funny Chris.I have the same experience in Iowa .A customer came in with stolen framed
bike. I told him and he had bought it at the local HD dealer. He couldn't get his money back and called the state police vehicle theft division. The retiring officer insisted I was wrong and was close friends of the HD dealership owner and defended him.I looked at the new guy, said the retiring guy was wrong and told him to contact HD[in this case I knew they would know]
I taught the new guy how to ID stolen bikes...He found out I was right and came to me to thank me.
The HD dealer had another on the showroom floor and the salesman that took the trade ins was from an outlaw motorcyle club[not the outlaws]The HD dealer never got spanked
