Chris do you have a factory picture of a 1920 Sport? That 1919 has all the options except the hand brake isn't that unusaul for a factory picture?

      Louie,
Although the Parts Lists state 1919 only I think early 1920 probably still had the hex head screw.
Just a gut feeling no proof.
      I have 4 Genuine HD Parts books covering the Sport Twin headed;

19W (with no date on the cover)
      19W and 20W November 15th 1919
      1920-1921 February 1st 1921
      1919-1923 August 15th 1922

It is from the above books that I've sourced most of my information

Denis-- I have a 1920 tank that I've taken completely apart so I can repair it. My tank was used for a pattern so yours could be repaired. Small world. Tom #381

          Ah!

Tom that is so funny!! It is a small world! I just love this stuff. I think I like the history and the research as much as I love working for the museum and doing the restorations! I just want it to be right!

Thanks again for taking the time to look into things for me. By the way, whats the status of your bike?

          Hope to see you soon

Denis I restored my Sport Model 25-30 years ago. It is ready to go and fun to ride. It is a battery model. The number is L20W5409. An extra engine I plan to build into a bike is L20W5465. Another engine I have is also a battery model and is 21WJ1562. I would like to trade a 1919 frame for a 1920 or 21 frame as I have almost enough parts to build another one. It is a sickness. Hey Tom

Those numbers look weird to me. Are you sure about them? Shouldn't it be W20L5409? and W20L5465? I thought that there was just the "W" model for 1919, the WF (magneto) model for 1920 as well as the lighted version WJ, then further on the WF and WJ for years 1921 through 1923. I haven't seen anything like your numbers. Also, why would your frame numbers be in the 5k range? They (Harley-Davidson) (from my research.....) made less than five thousand machines for 1920?

Is there not a connection to the serial number on the frame to the number of units that Harley-Davidson produced for that year? Why would they stamp a frame xxx5409 or xxx5465 if they haven't made that many units during the questioned year of 1920?? Does that make since to you?

              Woof!

Denis- My numbers are correct and original. I have a 1920 v twin engine that starts with L20Txxxx. I believe the L indicated an electric model. I don't know the frame # on my restored sport model but the frame did not come with the engine . The numbers on my two 1919 frames start with 19WF. Tom #381

Interesting, that what I was saying about my '20 magneto model. The info says they made 20WF and 20WJ in 1920 but mine is just a plain 20W. They must have put the L prefix on the early electric ones.
