So I got the bike wired up by the wiring diagram with new loom and repop dash with westin amp guage with needle pointing forward. I'm using a 6v modern battery and a 3 brush 32e with a solid state relay. I have a yellow wire and 2 red wires in the battery box to hook up. What color goes to what on the battery? I'm assuming its.positive ground so yellow goes to negative? Also should I have a ground wire from the box the the negative battery terminal?

Does it matter which way current flows through the relay and the coil?
    thanks

My '36 VL is Negative Ground. I'm not sure of colors on the loom.

"westin amp guage with needle pointing forward". So that's the earlier amp gauge which means the yellow wire goes from the right side terminal of the gauge to the battery negative (negative ground).
The 2 red wires go from 1) battery positive to relay, and 2) battery positive to left hand terminal of headlight key switch on dash.

"a 3 brush 32e with a solid state relay". If by solid state you mean a modern electronic regulator then that could be a problem with a 3 brush generator.
I think the modern regulator needs to go with a 2 brush gen.

Dear Peter, you can get two post electronic relays for the three brush 32E generator. With a Weston ammeter the 1935 wiring diagram in the Riders Handbook should work. The problem is that the diagram was not updated for the white face ammeter, which is upside down and with the ground on the other side. Harley advised running a ground wire from the ammeter to the frame rather than rely on grounding through the forks.
