So my Rosie has been misbehaving this morning after I let her sit for about a month. Drained old oil, switched batteries, topped off with SAE 50 high zinc, primed carb, started bike and went "Oh S***, I didn't pump oil into the crank case!". I only had ran her for 20 seconds or so before so I cut off the ignition and pumped 4 pumps into the crank case. When I stopped at work she had a pretty good leak by the chain sprocket. It eventually stopped and I might have lost maybe 1/4 a quart of oil. Did I overfill the crankcase? She seemed to run fine and smooth, but the leak was noticeable. Any thoughts?

20 seconds with no oil shouldn't do any harm on a VL. You probably overfilled the crankcase. The hand pump in good condition does about 50 ml/2 ounces per full stroke, and you can check by draining the cases, putting in say four strokes, then draining the cases again into a measuring cup and calculating how much per stroke. Three handpumps should put about 150 ml/6 ounces in the cases, and the idea is to come back after a ride with the same amount.
