  • 34 VD oil leak

So my Rosie has been misbehaving this morning after I let her sit for about a month. Drained old oil, switched batteries, topped off with SAE 50 high zinc, primed carb, started bike and went "Oh S***, I didn't pump oil into the crank case!". I only had ran her for 20 seconds or so before so I cut off the ignition and pumped 4 pumps into the crank case. When I stopped at work she had a pretty good leak by the chain sprocket. It eventually stopped and I might have lost maybe 1/4 a quart of oil. Did I overfill the crankcase? She seemed to run fine and smooth, but the leak was noticeable. Any thoughts?

Also, anyone know the size/type bolts that secure the tank to the frame? I appear to have lost 2 from vibrations.

They are #12 x 32 TPI. Replicant Metals sell them.

20 seconds with no oil shouldn't do any harm on a VL. You probably overfilled the crankcase. The hand pump in good condition does about 50 ml/2 ounces per full stroke, and you can check by draining the cases, putting in say four strokes, then draining the cases again into a measuring cup and calculating how much per stroke. Three handpumps should put about 150 ml/6 ounces in the cases, and the idea is to come back after a ride with the same amount.

I can confirm after that scenario I had no further issues with the VD. She ran really well.

Well, the bolts from Replicant Metals didn't fit. They're too small? Sucks because they're nice quality but pretty pricey for not working. I'll see if I can get them returned. If not they're up for grabs for anyone who wants them.

Someone must've drilled & tapped your holes out bigger. Use one of your existing screws to work out what you need and go from there.

                  I agree with Peter.
Your other option is to restore the thread back to it's original dimension.
