Does it have the correct shift pattern for '39 with neutral between 2nd and 3rd? Many '39 models had the gearbox changed because people did not like that pattern. H-D changed it back in 1940 to the 36-38 pattern.

Shin, date code G 0 indicates the case was cast in July 1940. If it had been cast in 1950 the code would probably have had no letters, only numbers. For example a BT trans case cast in Jan 1950 had date code 1 0. For more info about these date codes and other BT trans case ID here’s a link to a thread I started on the Panhead and Flathead forum in 2016.

Under the trans lid you may find casting number 33-35 and a date code. What’s the date code? Photo?
Also looks like you have a starter cover but I can’t tell much about it yet. Any ID outside the starter cover?

1940 transmission would have a bronze insert for 5th mounting bolt. 1950 transmission would have a steel insert for 5th mounting bolt. 1950 is also clearanced for down shifting lever.

I mentioned those things in my thread on the Panhead and Flathead forum in 2016 which is part of the reason I posted a link to it. And there I also mentioned other things to look for.

You're welcome. No ID on the starter cover doesn’t necessarily mean it’s AM. Maybe it is and maybe it isn’t but I can’t tell much about it yet. It may help if you post photos of its outside and inside. Thanks.
