    Cotten; I had the carb that came with the bike, but not the correct one. It had a 1 1/4 linkert with 2 air horn mounting holes. Polished so that you couldn't read the number on top. I put a Mikuni on it the next year and had no problems. Except for the ugly appearance. To the original point. I bought a K&N filter years back and had to trim the outer edge with an Xacto Knife to get to fit the OEM J Slot.

      I guess my point, Craig,..

      Was that it wasn't the aircleaner or carb that backfired.

      Nobody was bubble-testing in 1973.

      If they did, they kept it a secret.

        Sorry to butt back in, Folks,..

        But let's not forget the ol' too-slow potato-potato idle interrupted by a snap of the throttle while its still on the kickstand.

        If I wanted a fire, I'd try that first.

              Cotten; Beer has solved many problems over the years. By the way; Did you used to vend at J&P meets in Chicago and Belleville, Il. back in the 1980's. I remember a dark haired gentleman selling rebuilt Likerts at the meets.

                  Those were the days.

                    Hi Jerry, this was EXACTLY what I was instructed to to, I.e. open fully the choke and throttle wide open when starting the bike. I never did that before and was told this was was the right way of doing it. I think you just solve the mystery!!! Thank you! Ed

                      To dial it in a little better, Ed,..

                      The idle bleed circuit only works when the throttledisc is close to the idle bleed holes in the side of the bore, close to closed.
                      (The circuit reverses at higher speeds... This transition is magical at very least.)

                      If the idle screw has been set, t'aint never really closed.
                      Wide open throttle *might* help choking, but once the choke is opened and the ignition is hot, the throttle need only be 'cracked' open a little to start.

                      Or so I read on the internet.
