Sure, guy gave me the VIN when I asked for it. I didn't tell him I was going to plaster it on the internet (I had no intentions of doing that), so I didn't. I'm not saying you can't, I'm just saying I won't. No point going public with it. Anyone interested will see it for themselves, I'm sure.

"But, the Arizona DMV issued a legitimate title" The title is legit, sure...but the bike and numbers are not. The title may as well be written in crayon.

Since when did it become a crime to post a VIN Number?

"But, the Arizona DMV issued a legitimate title" The title is legit, sure...but the bike and numbers are not. The title may as well be written in cray" >>>And...by the same token?

It's not a crime to post a VIN. I just didn't want to do it to someone without telling them; some people get weird about that. As far as the rest of it, the numbers are hinky. If I owned something with a numbers job that bad, I sure wouldn't want to be associated with it on the internets.

        Have a nice night.

Just one more thing Gov, i posted the pic with the last 2 digits fuzzed-out. There are a hundred combinations w/o ever knowing the correct variation.

Far be it for me to argue but those look like good early 1937 UL numbers to me. Jerry

No offense Gov, but I feel it is worth posting this information when a M/C is questionable.

The purpose of the Forum is to inform someone who might be interested in a particular M/C, but doesn't have a clue when it might be questionable. What threw me was the depth of the stampings, the number/letters look similar to my 1938 UL. Mine were stamped like Hercules wacked them! Sometimes i had to bowden wire them out, because of the filth trapped inside.
              Thanks for the input Jerry.

So I sat down and researched this for a little while. A long while, actually. And yeah, maybe they're good numbers. I did not realize how much difference occurred between type families in 1937.

The numbers are struck very, very deep, but I guess some folks have said even that is normal.

So perhaps I'm a moron. I hope Eric steps in and gives a lesson here, because Palmer doesn't really cover this sort of thing, and keeping this all hush-hush means that guys like me have no idea what the hell we're supposed to be looking for when we see bikes/motors/cases come up for sale.

After looking, I don't even believe this is a VL top on here. I believe this is a UL in a VL chassis.

govmule84, it takes a big man to admit you may have made a mistake, which is unheard of on any online type forum. Thanks you have my respect.

'Preciate it, but that's just being a normal human being. I even told the seller I think I made a mistake. I was unaware that '37 was such a mish-mash of typefaces, and after sitting down and looking at pictures, I determined I am probably incorrect. Numbers are a particularly difficult thing to learn as a younger member, because there are not good books on it, and the only thing you can do is learn and watch and read and hope you are picking up good information. Some of the older guys saw these numbers before numbers jobs, good and bad alike, were as common. I really do hope Speeding Big Twin stops by to educate us some; I always learn a lot from his posts.

The bike is cool. The 4-speed and U engine (I'm serious, I think the whole mill is U) and cut fenders sort of make it like an early hot-rod bike. After cutdowns, I guess, but before choppers. And it's painted up all pretty, so it's not really a race setup... just a hot little street number. I'd love to ride it if the price was right. I made the fella an offer I thought was fair, but it's way less than asking.

Still, it's so neat... if he gets offended, he gets offended. oh well. I got time.

Give that man a Kewpie Doll!!! After scrutiny, it definitely is a complete 1937 U Motor. Guess i got lost in all the hoopla in regard to whether the Motorcycle was legit, and all the insignificant grips involved. Then again, the pictures could have been older??? Didn't really bother, because i have no intention of buying--I'm at a selling stage currently!
Good Luck Gov, like i said when i posted, it looks like a nicely done ride. I e-mailed this guy for a copy of the title, and it is not an builder/assemblers, the title reads... 1937 Harley-Davidson.

*P.s. As far as fitting a Compete U motor in the VL frame goes, it's about the clearance with the front exhaust pipe. I've had good luck persuading pipe with an expansion tool and heat.

Oh ya Gov, hopefully you'll strike a good deal with UL/VL--now let's not forget about my finders fee---hahaha.

If you're referring to me Pan620, all i did was post... 'Good Looking 1932 VL'. Begin at the Begin, and you'll see what transpired. It's not easy, especially these days, inquiring into the aspects of a simple ad, and then trying to decipher what is really going on, without actually being there. Get a grip--this ain't no mess! Besides, it almost never fails, when i pass along an ad for a Motorcycle, some members-(not all), are either...MR. Know it All, Rude, or just plain Smart Asses. No wonder this Forum has 15 to 20 members participating, to 200-300 non-members viewing! I'm sure this post will kick up some dirt also. haha Ya' right.

Have a nice day--and i mean just that! And now, something to break-up the monotony.

Take up discussion of engine numbers on the judging part of this site. At the moment we have an arms race going on between the AMCA judges and the guys making number stamps, but I like to think the judges are still ahead.
