Thanks. I think I have the short shaft. Found a 30 motor so when I bolt it up we will see. Welded in the missing cross member so I have an upper mount and got a great deal on a set of tanks. I know it is a mut but building it to ride not for show and just wanted to keep a vintage look and as original as I CAN AFFORD.......100_0586.jpg.

        Post Script

The tranny to rear wheel sprokets line up perfectly.

OK. Finaly got my motor, an actual 30 VL. Finished the bottom end and putting it back togather. Question is where is the flywheel mark window? Is the hex head just below the large screw head near the front of the case or is it the big screw head?

There is no timing mark opening on a 30VL motor. I forget what year they started putting them on the engines, but none on a 30VL. NORMALLY, they would be over the serial number boss. As long as your timing gears are all lined up correctly, your motor will be in time. Then, check your timer and breaker plate and make sure that the "File Marks" are in line. That's it!

SO where do I start? Line up the middle line on the pinion gear with gear #2, the left line on gear #1, the right on gear #3, and so on?

Wyatt, I'm going to assume that it's no different from a JD. I'm also assuming your trying to time the distributor (circuit breaker)? Find the book, find were the front pistons suppose to be (before or after top dead) right after the front intake valve closes. Etc. Bob L

This is kind of like a puzzle. You START with the Pinion gear which is the one that does not come out. Then, you put the inner most gears in and then you line up the gear marks with each other. This will take some trial and error, but once you see it is in right, you KNOW it is right and cannot be wrong. With the valves in place, you will have to sometimes lift the valve up so the cam roller will clear the cam on the gear as you slide it in. On a particular hard one, I was able to "guess" by holding the gear in the lined up position and then, rotate the engine/gears slightly and then push the cam gear in place as soon as the cam was in the "low" position (know what I mean?).

PM me your email and I can send you some pictures of the timing marks and gears all lined up on my VL.

I think I have it. The marks all line up almost perfectly except the #1 that runs the breaker. It is slightly off but cannot get it any better. Don't need to worry about TDC? E-mail: wempey@tehachapipd.com

Nope. Can't get it any better. Off about 1/2 tooth. I think it will be fine. My 28 had one gear about 1/2 tooth off and it ran fine. Rear cylinder and bottom end done and I installed a 32E 3 brush generator last night. Getting closer. The only forseeable issue I see is with the tranny as previously mentioned. I have a rotary top. The rear drive sproket lines up great but the clutch and motor sprokets will be off. THe only way I can see is to remove the outer support bracket and bearing and open up the clutch tapper so it will go further onto the shaft. But then I may have wear issues and the clutch may not work as the shaft will stick out too far? Will this work out or do I need to find an older tranny? The one I have is in REALY nice condition and would like to make it work if I can. ANy suggestions?

Sorry, I can't help you with any suggestions on the transmission.

sounds like you used a jd shaft somewhere. you'll need to change out the main shaft.
