  • Schebler Carb ID

Looking for help identifying this carb, no numbers on top of body, has H55 on throttle lever, looks like 1" threaded connection, I have the 1928 Schebler service manual but not much help, thanks in advance.

That's not much to go on, Louie!

Can you measure the thread pitch, diameter, and direction (handedness)?

It is definitely LH threads I'll measure pitch (guessing 20 since all the LH's are), I don't understand "a pic wouldn't hurt" statement, I posted 8 pics, do you need some more of something specific? Thanks.

Update, I can see my posted pics but maybe posted them wrong and they cant be seen by others?? I'll repost them...

I can see them now, Louie!

The screw'd throttlelever shows resourcefulness, and the partially drilled hole into the threads (with solder beneath it) will be the harder repair. (Perhaps it was for a set screw?)

One early Hen carb I did was originally a 14mm bore, so anything is possible with Scheblers.

                Me too Louie.

Stamping may have started in 1920 with the HX147, but apparently even then, not for all models.

                Gotta love Scheblers.

Good to know, any idea when they stopped making the screw on models?

                    The chart I posted, Louie,

                    Is our best guess.

These are photos of the Schebler carb from my 1923 ACE. The number is HX178. Hope this helps.

I tried to snag the stamping , Spag,

And it looks like 173 to me...

                        hx173 stp.jpg
                        (Re-plating over damage never helps....)

Neither HX173 nor HX178 show in any of my listings, which certainly is not unusual.

Returning to Louie's gem, note how it not only has a screw-on attachment instead of a flange, the inlet airvalve is not bell-shaped like later issues, the airvalve starting stem is more typical of earlier marques as it has a fat knob (with a vertical straight knurl instead of 'diamond', and probably no pin detente), and lacks a high-speed auxiliary airvalve completely.

By my pic collection, if Louie's is possibly a Hen, it would be pre-'12.

I stand corrected Tom. It is 173. Is it unusual for a Schebler carb not to have numbers? I haven’t seen many early Schebler carbs but the ones I’ve seen all had numbers.

There were a helluvalot of Scheblers made before 1920, Spag!

Every one of them was "unusual."

I have an early Schebler carb and there are no numbers on it. The pictures are of another early Schebler; just like mine, but not mine.
