Why is that? Like I have said my Cad plater was plating anthting that would fit in a 15 gallon drun for 50 bucks. Sadly he died and the business closed a few months ago.

The batteries in hybrids and electric vehicles depend upon cad.

Fake cad is a lot easier to touch up.

I once saw a "Restored" 1936 EL where all the cadmium plating on the bike was the "Fake Cad" from Eastwood. Rather than looking like cad it looked like rattle can aluminum, which it was.

If you do a little research here I do believe not long ago there was a thread on Cad plating and in it there was 3 or 4 places mentioned that did it!

                    Howdy Chaps,

There is no credible substitute for real cad. Though formulaes have changed from the days when it was customary fitment on your machine in the 40's resulting in a slightly different appearance these days, sourced from a vendor equiped (authorized) to perform this service it's as good as ever, so to speak. Under incredible regulatory constraints, you've got to find someone who's primary revenue source pays (for the luxury) of offering this service to the general public and that is aviation and military. For which anyone geared to service the latter is preferred. Contact Bilmark at the info under ..resources at my site here 1941 Indian Four - Unfinished Business - , they supply the navy and the owner is vintage motorcycle enthusiast.

They have never lost nor damaged a piece in over 20 years but I take no chances using a dedicated plywood box with bolted down top.

I experimented with Cottons coating and this is what I got out of it. This is only one coat at present. I line the cover with nos oem cad gear cover screws to show the two finishes. I also took two different lighting photos. What do you all think ???? Paps

Simply put, fake is fake. Whether it be new paint made to look old, paint trying to look like plating, chemicals put on plating to make it look old. It is not the real deal.

And that's why we call it "fake".

                            Aren't all reproduction parts "fake"?

Isn't a recovered seat or fresh sheetmetal paint also "fake"?

So a re-plated finish on a part is just as fake.

Why not choose something a lot more friendly in terms of cost and toxicity, especially when nearly all modern cad plating is easily distinguishable from original anyway?

All we are talking about is a cosmetic dressing.
What is wrong with preserving original finishes beneath a strippable coating?

Re-plating is destructive, as the original finish and the story it has to tell is gone forever.

More history has been destroyed by overzealous restoration than will ever be saved.

If a reproduction part is made the same as an original part it is a replacement. Using original plating and or paint. Would you buy a reproduction seat that was built on a fiberglass pan and covered with Naugahyde?
I don't know why people are looking for something that resembles cadmium plating unless they are just too damn lazy to sent their parts out for the correct plating. My God people, UPS goes everywhere.

                                Fake Cad

I tried the Eastwood "spray cad" on some car parts years ago. It's good paint, but that's what it is, paint, and that's what it looks like. For touch-up on small parts, such as a couple nuts and bolts etc, I've used cold galvanizing spray. After it dries I've worked it over with very fine steel wool and/or buffed it with a rag, and gotten some OK results. Takes a little experimenting, and would not work for anything but small stuff, it actually holds-up pretty well though. Bottom line though, if you want the look of real cad, nothing beats the real thing.
