I'll bet you made good use of it over the years! Looks very useful for many things.

Almost as often as my Mexican and Swedish mills, Duke...

PS: Back to your pre-War M51 project,

It is indeed a sweet one, but necessarily 'rebuilt' (at least once), in modern times.

Are you using a camera/desktop for pics, or a phone? (Please convert .png pics to.jpg so we can view them full size, if you can.)

            Cotten,

I'm using my cell phone. In my years of service and Industry work, I've been terrible about taking photos never less any quality knowledge of photography.

The owner asked to come by today while I adjusted valves, compression tested the cylinders, leak tested the cylinders, leak tested the intake system, properly set point gap and ignition timing and install the carburetor.

He had a lot of questions even though he's been riding these for over 45 years. Questions are good! I feel a better educated owner is a happier owner.

It was a fun day overall. The high light of the day was starting this motorcycle for the first time after sitting for many years.
He asked me to do the honors, which I was grateful for.
He witnessed two prime kicks and then it starting on the 1st kick. Honestly not sure what was better for me, his smile of excitement or running this preserved piece of history.

                  Fun Day!

What did you use as a starting point for the throttle disc Duke? As in, '2 turns of the throttle stop screw to give enough air gap at the disc' or something like that?

                      Peter,

What I do as a base setting is adjust the idle speed screw until the throttle disc exposes the entire diameter of the 1st idle fuel supply hole. I've circled it in a photo below. This a base point to start on all carburetors. Have a screw driver accessable when you start the engine to make any small adjustments, especially at operating temperature.

                        I don't understand, Duke,

That bleed should be exposed even when the disc is fully seated; The disc should close in the middle of the bleeds:

                        DISKBLED.jpg

After installing the disc to its sweetest spot with the idle stop released, I tightened the screws, and then cracked opened the idle stop screw about three-quarters of a turn.
(It was better to set it too fast than too slow for initial tuning.)

PS: Did you reuse that boatanchor float?

                          Cotten,

I installed a Rubber Ducky branded float.

That will run better and last longer than the Starklite, Duke!

But you best pick one fuel and stick with it:

                              Cotten,

I was at a family event earlier today for new years. I had a photo on my phone I tried to use to answer Peters question thinking I'd try and help sooner than later. Anyhow I got home now and took some pictures to hopefully clarify the idle speed screw setting...

This first image is with the disc entirely closed shown below.
                              IMG_20260101_154804954.jpg

This next image below shows the disc set at my idle base setting using the idle speed screw.

                              IMG_20260101_154830908.jpg
The last image shows it set to far open exposing the large last transitional hole.

                              IMG_20260101_154854235.jpg

                              My apologies for any confusion,

There's only your 3rd pic showing at my end Duke but I think I get the approach. Make sure the first hole is uncovered, which as Tom says it should be anyway, but the 2nd hole stays covered as such. So I'll start at 3/4 of a turn on the idle stop screw and go from there. Carb is Schebler DLX-72 so doesn't have the slot between the holes but I'm assuming that won't change anything?
