Has anybody ever figured out why HD built that miserable 1939 4 speed?

That is a good question.
It was short lived...

I believe it was some bean counters attempt to convince the MoCo to save money with parts commonality with the 3 speed, 3&R, and 4 speed sharing some parts. Customer and dealer feedback (most likely Police like the CHP and LAPD that bought lots of bikes ) put a quick end to the crashbox style. It was a grim time financially then.

Yes but the early 3R shared as many parts with the early 4 speed as did the later 3R and the 39 4 speed. It doesn't make sense.

True Jerry, it does not. But if stuff always made sense life would be a bit boring...

Hey Jerry, how did you get your fork alignment tool to work on both forks,
I finally just use the lid om my 39 EL

The alignment tool works just fine on any gearbox from '36-'79. The neutral position is the same for all gearboxes despite internal configuration.

Johnny It should have worked just like with other 4 speeds.
