That is an old Easyriders points-and-condenser wiring diagram. You axed for magneto. All you need to do is ignore all the wiring following off the ignition sw. to the coil. You run a ground wire off the side of (I presume) your Fairbanks-Morse dash-58 ("short stub") Sportster magneto, to any of a variety of places. Simplest is a piece of flat "spring steel," like a feeler gauge blade, screwed on the (insulated) grounding post on the magneto but not touching anything. You're always "on." Press the steel blade against the magneto body to ground it to stop the engine. Next step would be a wire to a push button sw. to ground somewhere. Fanciest would be to a second stock horn button installed on your handlebar, opposite side from the real horn button, but just like it.
This is all in addition to the key switch, which should be in the side of your Fairbanks-Morse magneto. Turn it on, kick over the bike, turn it off and the bike stops.
Ive run the F-M magneto occasionally in my U-models. Same set up, same adapting parts as in 45s or Ironhead Sportsters. If you have a short-stub F-M magneto with the mechanical tach drive in its base, you can have an adventure hunting up the original Sportster tach and cable, and drive unit. (IF the driving gear on the magneto isn't shot from wear, as most of them are).

put the magneto where the timmer was and run 2 wires from the top holes in the mag to your spark plugsrob ronky #10507

I have run a mag on my 45 for 20+ years with no capacitor or battery eliminator. A 12 V gen with a Bosch Reg. I have mine set up with the stock ign switch where you turn it to on it completes the (ground) circuit and it kills the mag! Works great. When the Engine starts, the lights come on. Every once in a while when I come back to my bike the switch has been turned to the OFF position, by a Good Samaritan! Then I am ready to Kick!

Indianut, up above brought that possibility up. If I remember correctly: There's a deal that uses a large capacitor to allow the power the magneto is putting out to illuminate very limited number of lights (very poor: lights, despite the capacitor [acts as an electrical "moderator" in circuit] go up and down, up and down), depending on how fast or slow the motor's running. The "Battery Eliminator" is another beast, that lets you use a stock generator, but same way, lights go up and down.
Indianut, I hope will chime in here. I haven't fooled with these things for over 35 years, when they were "all the rage," during the chopper craze.

Hi, again, Mootch,
Here's a whole discussion of Sportsters with magnetos and Battery Eliminators and stock capacitors, right here in the forum. (Gained by typing a few key words into "Search" above):
http://www.antiquemotorcycle.org/bbo...ator#post72925
Note these:
"Would also like to point out that your '65 is a 12V and the '64 would be a 6V. In speaking with my friend again, he referred me to Shop Dope #347, dated Sept-54, as the only wiring he was aware of for 6V Sportsters and K-models without a battery." - Brian Howard
The (stock CH magneto Sportster capacitor's) part number was 32727-63" - contributed by VPH-D
And: "Google the part number. There as several references/links to it." - contributed by Bill Gilbert in Oregon
I hope this puts you on the right path. Old H-D factory update bulletins, sent to dealers and called "Shop Dopes," are reprinted. Antique Cycle Supply published "Service Shop Dope Volume III" which contains Shop Dope #347. Do you have a library card, Mootch? From your local library, I mean, wherever you live. With just that little passport to knowledge, you can order an interlibrary loan from the Dayton Metro Library (Ohio) of "Service Shop Dope Volume III", which has a copy of it "on the shelf." All that took about 10 minutes to find, on Google.
Hope this helps!Last edited by Sargehere; 03-04-2010, 11:09 AM.
