Exact vintage of this Edison-Splitdorf RM magneto?

Can anyone tell me the exact applications for this Edison-Splitdorf RM magneto?

Please note that it has hex fasteners on either side of the nameplate (post-War?).

Not certain if the seller was Danny Weil, but if so then it's likely correct information, 1940 and up Chief.

You're probably right, Harry!

I had too many ebay pic 'snags' to pick from.

So I'm safe to call the one I posted "post-'44"?

My rebuilder says its serviceable, but could use a new rotor anyway.

Cotten, I only found that Ebay sale out of curiosity because that magneto looked familiar, so I put up the link to that sale because lo and behold it had the same type of RM 04051. The seller is listed as indiannut from Largo, FL and that is most likely Danny Weil, He lists it as 1940 to 1953. If it is Danny Weil then the information can be relied on, I think, because he's a long time Indian guy, smart, and knows his stuff.

Of course, it is Ebay!

If it helps.... on the ID tag, type 04051 is CW rotation for Chief. Scout is CCW and the correct ID would be 04052. The letter P after designates a plain bushing (bronze) for the rotating gear / cam assembly. Some other models used a needle bearing and had no letter designation after the number I believe.

As to years, I believe it started in 1940 but I don't know how late they offered a mag model. However, it was my understanding that all Bonneville models (chief and scout) were equipped with magneto ignition only from the factory. So, when was the last Bonneville model?

Price, around $500.00 if it is complete, works and somebody needs one. Most guys throw them away because they are harder to start! The mag models required a different starter gear ratio to spin the mag fast enough to get a good spark when starting. Add a tight motor and higher compression and that gets harder. However I believe the Bonneville cams had enough overlap that they were not that hard to turn over. I suspect running stock cams would make a motor harder to start.

I believe your Rm 4 cyclinder mag would be years 40-42.

Its only got two sockets on the cap, Tom!

My magneto man, who is a local I have known for many years, just serviced it, but he didn't leave me his phone number!

Have to catch him at the grocery again, and ask the rotation, because I don't want open it, and I know I shouldn't spin the gear.

I thought I might be missing something.The Indiannut listings was what I thought was chief.
Looking at my self example its like yours with two dummy caps.
I think gharper answered the rotation question.

The W confused me. I'm easily confused.

I guess its not eating anything on the shelf, but mags don't like to sit, and its fresh (although the rotor could be a little fresher, I'm told).

I dont know what the W is for but mine is also prefix W.It came from a pretty original 47 chief mag.not Bonn. in the 2500vin range.
