As best I understand it, our sites were not attacked, the host computers that we pay every month to handle our free forums (more than just caimag.com) were attacked. And, as I understand it, once they are attacked 3 times some of the software companies list them as attack sites.

If the host computers were the carrier, they must have had multitudes of sites go down, along with yours, unless of course, they only hosted yours. One point that was made was that it's not worth their time to write code for older operating systems and browsers so the bulk of code is written for new systems. So there is some merit to the statement that older computers are safer but they are not 100% safe. Apple used to advertise that their systems were virus free. That's because Apple had a small market share and it wasn't worth the hackers time. Probably not the case anymore with the popularity of Apple on the rise. (I have an Apple and I still use AV software.) Have you noticed that Apple no longer makes that claim?Originally posted by 23JDCA 808 View Post"... as bugs are not written for old operating systems." I hadn't thought of that. I feel a little better about our three year-old laptop now. ...bill in corvallisLast edited by Vintage229; 09-29-2010, 05:19 PM.

The way I look at it, the only party to profit from writing an attack upon my WIN98SE would be Microsoft themselves.Originally posted by Vintage229 View PostSo there is some merit to the statement that older computers but they still are not 100% safe.
And they already left it to wither and die years ago.
Only those of us who love obsolescence for obsolescence's sake could understand keeping such a system.
Not that such a thing has anything to do with antique motorcycles.
Anybody else browing with WIN98SE or earlier?
Nevermind.

I was very attached to the original win98 Cotten. I even ordered a super computer, built to my specifications, and with that early 98 version of windows installed in it. I also received a disc of the win98 software with the pc system. Ya don't get the actual software disc with a new pc anymore. Anyhow, the system I ordered had everything one could imagine. Even had dvd burner, along with two cd drives, one floppy drive and one floppy compression drive. 40 gig x 2 hard drives, which was out of sight capacity at the time. The software failed in the system early though. Seems, according to the builder of the system, the software was not compatible with the newest of hardware installed. They should have told me this before i ordered the personalized system. They should not have offered the software in the package options. Paps

On another note....virus software is only as good as the known viruses already stored in it. Updates are additions to a virus library. Those updates add newly found viruses to the protection. One is always just either one click away from a newly created virus. We hope that one click is always after the virus software knows of a newly created virus and not one click before. Paps
