Motorcycle riders please read and comply,

In a March 26, 2010 Settlement Agreement and Consent Order between Advanced
Carbon Composites and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA), agreed that all models and sizes of its EXT-001, EXT-002 and
EXT-003 Half Shell Motorcycle Helmets, regardless of date manufactured, fail
to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 218, 49
C.F.R. § 571.218.

These light helmets have become fairly popular over the past few years with
military personnel. The helmets do not meet "DOT" standards and our riders
should not be wearing them. The fact that they have been sold as "DOT"
helmets for at least the past four or five years (with military discounts),
only to find out now that these helmets didn't pass NHTSA's selective
verification testing is very disturbing. A significant number of riders
have been at greater risk all this time due to effectively false claims by
the manufacturer, that, otherwise, they would not have been authorized to
accept.

Actually it is the helmet maker that is issuing the refund. NHTSA is, of course, the Federal govt. body who is supposed to see that motorcycle safety helmets sold as DOT approved do , in fact, meet the DOT test requirements.

Unfortunately, the NHTSA allows helmet makers to "self-certify" their products by conducting their own testing on their own helmets, or having a consultant lab test samples of their helmets and then certifying to NHTSA that their helmets meet the required minimum standard. There is a clear opportunity here, as you can see, for helmets which are sub-standard to reach the open market. And NHTSA does only very limited testing of these "self-approved" helmets so they are not likely to pick up on a problem unless they receive numerous complaints.

The DOT standard, by the way, is, I understand, almost 40 years old and is considered by several authorities on the subject to be outdated and therefor less protective than other more recently developed helmet standards.

Nice to know.

On the military installations here in Germany, you got to have:

Boots, DOT approved helmet, leather gloves, eye protection (duh), Large Reflective Vest.

Or no riding you bike on the post, Ya can park it at the gate and walk if you don't have all the gear on.

Plus, for the guys like me that got baggers, only ONE speaker in the helment.

So don't use them, just turn up the volume on the externals and get a decent balance/loudenss that suits me.

I caught **** from the Officer of the Day on base for wearing an orange helmet with my dress uniform. In his opinion it should have been white.
