  • Cannonball News!

Except for Joe's great ongoing project it's been awhile since the Cannonball topic has been mentioned. I'm still in awe that Lonnie has taken on such a monumental task. Here's a link to some current info and other great material. Check it out if you haven't already.......

I'm a little disappointed that Pete won't be riding his 1896 Pennington replica -- "The Motor Cycle" -- but maybe he doesn't want to show up the rest of the crowd too much with its river-jumping performance! ;-)

Heck, if he rode the Pennington he'd finish days ahead after traveling down railway lines, over mountains and passing on using public roads altogether! If you combine that with the river-jumping option he would certainly have an unfair advantage...

I was thinking this machine may be more suitable ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t93QlgBu4Is but I don't know if Lonnie wants to use water trucks as a support option...

That was very cool Cory thanks, Pete's a good man, I would sure like to see that steam motorcycle going down the road, to cool.

Steam would be nice too, but rather old fashioned. If someone replicated Pennington's air-screw cycle they could just fly over the country with ease! Listening Pete?

That photo looks familiar. I believe it was taken in Toronto.

You're correct, Barry. The location is in High Park in the west end of the old "City of Toronto", specifically at the junction of the north/south road and the branch road to the zoo on the east side of Grenadier pond and just to the north of the park zoo. The same fence, road arrangement, and style of street lamp were still there in the park in the early 1950s when I used to bicycle through there.

The man on the left taking a picture may be one of the James brothers, prominent Toronto commercial photographers of the time who used an Excelsior and sidecar to travel to their various jobs.

I recall that picture..... thank-you for the great added detail! Do you know if the James brothers ever produced any "moving" pictures. I've seen adds that say it was something they offered.

What's the story on the Dixie Flyer that's entered? Are you familiar with this machine Jurassic?

I got an email a couple years ago when the Dixie Flyer was for sale, I guess I got it because I'm the Dixie Chapter contact. I have original pictures of, of course the original paint looks better now...hummm.
                              I'll post the pics later.
