In defense of Shovels, put a thin film of grey Permatex on the back side of a clean counter shaft sprocket, install a “super nut” and you’ll be as a dry as a Gold Wing. Be sure to get the version with the O ring on the nut face.

The original maindrivegear seal must be pulled for the bandaid to work at all.

If there is a lot of slop between the shaft and the MDG bushing, it won't last long either.
