  • >>JUDGING @ WAUSEON<<

Greetings. I plan on taking my H-D 1946 U Model to the 2025 AMCA Wauseon Meet. I haven't had anything judged in many M()()Ns. What is the skinny in a nutshell to have the '46 looked over? The reason i'm asking here on the forum is because the AMCA Judging website will not accept my login for some reason.

    *Thank You.

Dear JoJo, there is a three week pre-entry deadline for judging registration which you may just have missed. Contact the Wauseon judging team and say you are planning to bring a late entry, which they should accept for a Harley. The lead time is to allow research on unusual entries and matching number checks so that all entries get a fair shake. The judging rules are posted on the Website and are worth reading. We judge only restored and unrestored bikes against a criterion of factory correct, so older restorations or repainted original machines take big hits. All bikes must run. If your bike is going in as restored then you will take a deduction on the seat for instance. All bikes start with 100 points in 25 categories of 4 points each, then the judges systematically go through to find variations from factory correct in each category, with a minimum deduction of a quarter point. Judges then score each variation but leave the addition of points to the administrators, lest they try to target a result. Owners are allowed to observe the judging process. Expect your bike to take a good thrashing from world class experts who know the details. There are running changes in 1946 on headstock frame angle, forks, fender braces and stainless trim, so this is a hard year to get right for judging, but whatever the result you have a nice riding motorcycle. Good luck.

Restored bike are judged to the condition they were in when they left the factory. Your appears to be unrestored. The repaint will cost points as will the extra chrome and ratty seat.

I wish the AMCA "Marque of Excellence Winners" feature was a little . . . deeper? more extensive?? The dozen or so bikes rated Excellent are only from 2022-24 and only four or five pictures of each. I would like to see more pictures of bikes as they left the factory. I am not "into" judging BUT it would be nice to see how details.

Hey Steve, does "which they should accept for a Harley." Not that I care because I don't get stuff judged but only HD's are ok if they are late?

                  Hey M.A.D.!

'The skinny in a nutshell to have the '46 looked over' is to thicken your skin and personally detach from the judgement.

Maybe you will get useful info, but just as much, or more, could be learned just by posting decent pics and letting the forum 'experts' pic it apart.

The downside is that some may appreciate it for what it is.

                  And MicMac!

If you try to make sense of the judging system it will only piss off the system.

Dear MicMac, the three week pre-registration deadline is supposed to be firm but the Event Chief Judge is allowed to make exceptions. For instance a 1912 Triumph pushed in on judging day would be unlikely to be reviewed because of lack of qualified judges. But given a three week lead time the team could ask for digital photos, check engine and frame numbers, and get comments from Club experts even if they would not be present at the meet. But if there is one thing our Club can do, surely it is to judge older Harleys, which is why I made the comment that I would expect the Wauseon judging team to cut JoJo some slack for being a couple of days late this time.Cotton's comment about thickening your skin in well taken, as a '46 risks disqualification for incorrect engine/frame combination, something we've seen before. The crate comment is also true, as most bikes would have arrived ex-factory at the dealers partially dismantled and iun a wooden railroad crate. But I still think the AMCA judging system makes sense, just take some time to read through the rule book. It's a game that not everybody wants to play, but the 90% of members who don't care to particpate still admire the awesome restoration skills of the 10% who do.

                      So you think, Steve,...

The 90% of members who don't care to participate have no awesome restoration skills?

The system has always defeated its own mandate by not only discouraging with elitist ridicule, but by encouraging the elite to destroy what little authentic history is left.

                        Let’s be honest here folks. . .

Unless our minutes are misrepresenting, less than 10 percent of members participate in judging.

Yet a lot of amca members sell unjudged, “restored” bikes regularly.

                        But, but, but. . .
