  • That new "Marquee" level Judging

Anyone care to share how that has gone for you? Once you are winners circle, you still run the bike, right? So now even if your bike was high point rated when you achieved the WC status. The club encourages you to run the bike. Now they add a new level of judging for WC status machines. For those of you that were say 90 points or higher at WC a number of years back, ran the bike and maintained to the points rating, and even corrected some things that got you closer to 100 pts - how did your judging go? Were you penalized for blue pipes? Faded rare cast aluminum timing and primary covers? I'm just curious what judges focus in on with a high point WC bike maintained at the same level of "correctness" but has signs of use.

I guess I'm looking for detail on how this new level of status works. Of course if you kept your WC 99+ resotration covered and unused you would be fine. But what if you actually ran it but have no damage but things like blued pipes, dull sand cast, etc are present. Are we expected to make it look all shiney and new as it did wihen it received the WC award as if never run again afterwards?

A painting was painted to show on a wall so people could view it. Vehicles were made to drive or ride as a form of transportation. When did a motorcycle morph into a piece of art? I must have been using them for all the wrong reasons all these years. How could i have been so mistaken?

Ahh I get you. But I am trying to preserve a specific one that can be used as a reference for others to bump against if they are trying to restore one. A '65 FLH PAN is a hard one to get right. But I do run it. And I have had numerous members trying to do an accurate restoration ask me about a lot of very specific things.

I disagree with you just a bit as I think motorcycles, especially vintage are in fact art. Utilitarian for sure - but "art" to me nonetheless.

Else - why would we bother so much to keep them running, restored, etc. They are a thing of beauty IMHO.

I thought it mostly had to do with (TALAM). Turn around look at me.

You made me look up "marquee", Rbnash!

I knew "marque", usually British parlance, meant trademark name,
and I knew "marquis" was a royalty title,
but applying a roof structure (with a sign) to denote vintage motorcycles' excellence lost me.

(That's easy to do, but I would still like to know...)

PS: Sorry for the late edit, but I just now got it that it's like a trophy?

I had points deducted for "older restoration" at Dixon last year. I think I am done with AMCA judging.

Dear All, the new Board-approved judging handbook and the judging disclaimer we all sign are posted on the AMCA Website and worth a read. One change is that existing Winners Circle machines are now considered as being for display and don't have to be started, unless entered for the Marque Excellence Award. They still have to maintain 85 points of course to keep receiving multiple WC medallions. Blued pipes and bug splatter etc signs of riding are not penalised.

The rules say restored bikes must maintain their factory fresh look, so there could be deductions for older restorations. We are a riding club, and getting a Winners Circle bike down to 85 points is a lot of paint chips, scratches, dents and dulling of paintwork and plating. The Marque Excellence award is not compulsory, but an option for high scoring WC machines. It needs a separate entry fee and seven digital photos submitted 21 days in advance for scrutiny by our Marque Specialist judges. We'll look at the statistics at the end of the season, but so far by no means all entries are achieving the Marque Excellence award.

I can share my experience of trialling the Marque Excellence process at Oley last season. My 98 point 1933 VL had a couple of Winners Circle awards and, as I wheeled it across the field, I saw it had the high horn button rather than the correct low one with the same part number. Schoolboy error, and the previous judges had missed this quarter point deduction so I went no further.

                I tried Steve!

It refuses to let me log in; I had hoped to find a mission statement.

Dear Tom, I just found it with no problem. You have to log in to post on this bulletin board, so if you go back to the front page of the Website then go to Events, then Judging Information, then Judging Handbook you should find it. I guess our mission is to preserve our little piece of automotive history, but you'll find other words on the Website.

Finding it ain't the problem, Steve!

Obviously, I can log-in here, but the website blocks me (..on my wife's modern PC, too).

Just curious what the latest mission of judging might be?

Where does the Club preserve this History for us? (Can we look up judged machines for info?)

It'd be hard to ride a bike with 48 year old tires, as I have. Plus, being a mint, 100 pt. 48 year old bike, major parts are non existent....

Dear Cotten, we were discussing a Winners Circle Gallery on the Judging Committee last year, but it was overtaken by the Marque Excellence award. We'll look at a Marque Excellence gallery so that members can view factory correct motorcycles, but there will still be a debate to be had so is unlikely to be available before next season.

That makes it pretty clear, Steve...

Its all about 'trophies' and 'awards'.

A fellow who actually needs guidance is better off to post his machine to this forum,..

Than to haul miles and miles to be humiliated.

Dear Cotten, you underestimate the awesome skills our members bring to their restorations, and their general goodwill. We don't see many trophy hunters, just members seeking recognition for the work they've put into accurately reconstructing factory correct motorcycles. For unrestored bikes I would discourage trophy hunting, as bringing such a piece from Junior to Senior level will require altering the history of that motorcycle.

After four decades in the industry, Steve,..

                              I got a pretty good handle on my customer base;

Feedback is that the vast majority have little interest in playing a sucker's game, even when they can fool the judges.

                              The system needs reformation, badly.
