  • soldering copper to steel

is it recommended/acceptable to solder copper to steel nipples with plumbing solder vs silver solder? I don't have silver solder capability currently.......

it depends on the strength needed, the metals actually being joined, and the cycling the part is subjected to. fitting gap also comes into play.

ie copper comes in many variety, ditto for steel. some wet better than others.

I never tried to silver-solder copper, Ken,

What nipples are you dealing with?

Silver soldering steel to copper is a standard practice in the refrigeration/AC industry.

My HVAC buddy gave me a bottle of flux a decade ago, Kozy!

But where on a vintage American motorcycle would you want copper-to-steel so permanent?

I seriously discourage it for inlet nipples with copper seals.

Are you talking about low temperature silver solder?

My lowest temp silver filler, Tom,..

Came from RioGrande jewelry supply, forgot the number.

I still wouldn't use it for anything I would ever want to take apart.

Soft solder is more friendly, of course!
