                  That is a 39WLDD, big fin cylinders and alloy heads. Yes, 45s still used I-beam forks in '39. H-D called the WLDD the WLD "Special" when it appeared. Note the angle of the decals in the factory literature.

                        Good observation Eric. Not sure why I didn't pick up on that before, but as soon as you said it the decals look really angled to me. Here is a picture of Armando Magri with a WLD from Frank Murray, racing in the 1939 Oakland 200. The emblems sure look angled in this picture.

                            • Magri did finish !st but they awarded it to Cottrell because the referee messed up. Armando would tell you the same as he did me but unfortunately he's no longer with us. Hence the reason they were both holding it. True story.
