    • My buddy just sent me these photos of his mom & dad. He said his mom just found them and he didn't know she had them. Can somebody tell me the model and year of the bike. Lee also wanted to know what the saucers are for on the front wheel. I'm thinking the bike is late 40's. I love the saddle shoes on his mom.

The bike is a decade older than you think. The smooth cam cover, forward swept forks, tail light, oil tank type, toolbox, early tanks are all saying '37-'38 U model. Hard to say if 74 or 80 as without seeing the engine number they appear the same. The tank emblems are '47 -'50 type so added later as an update. The wheel trim covers are aftermarket accessories..

        • I think the bike is a 1937 U. Looks like the oil tank feed line has the one year only fitting that is also the drain. To drain the oil you loosen the fitting on the oil pump then remove the banjo bolt on the tank fitting., pull the oil line out of the way, then reinstall the banjo bolt which opens a valve in the oil tank fitting draining the oil. Kind of a PITA. Guess that's why they went back to the line and drain plug like the '36 knucklehead.

          • Thanks guys. I was way off on the year. I knew you guys would help me. Looking at the bike it appears to have a bunch of farkles. My buddy Lee takes after his dad as he farkles all his bikes too.

The truth is, we love our farkles just as much as the next rider. They let us add a personal touch to our machines, and let’s face it, a well-chosen farkle really can make a long trip safer .

                      • The rider of this Excelsior did not survive an argument with a train on the Yaldhurst railway crossing which is in Christchurch, New Zealand.
                        Accident occurred late 1916.
I'll put a copy of this on the Excelsior page as well Big X 260001.jpg
