Is there any advantage as far as heat dissipation? Or merely a matter of camouflage.

      Theoretically, Kozy,..

A layer of paint would insulate.

Still haven't seen a convincing pic... .. . Found one!

(That's about the only definitive pic of over three hundred WLA snags I have collected. Virtually all that are visible appear aluminum.)

Well, I wanted to be of some help for clarity, but may just confuse things more. I have 3 OEM NOS heads still with the cosmoline.

          Great data, BLB!

But its still hard to make the call that "most" WLAs had black heads.

I think I was the first to open the black painted one from the original box years ago and it had the production sticker still on it, but several moves later and that taped on sticker is gone.

                *M.A.D.*

Scroll down 7/8, just under the tire information ~ 'How to recognize the different types'... It will specify different models with...'Black Painted Heads'.

The 1918 photo labelled 'First Yank in Germany' was Cpl Holz from Chippewa Falls Wisconsin. He always maintained that he got lost and was just trying to get back to his unit. He was actually leaving germany.
