  • Vertical Speedometer Dial Face

    Duffy,

How can you tell the difference between a reproduction Indian vertical speedometer dial face and an original?

I have seen a few of these in assembled ones for sale and they look like the numbers have a blue cast to them. This one is black and white with rough metal finish on the back.

IMO that face is what most would consider 48-51 chief with screw mounting holes at 30&100mph
A vertical would, according to most, have three small mounting rivets at 12,7and 5 oclock.
Although no documentation my 1951 chief came with an original vertical style speedo. While some see this as incorrect ,I believe it left the factory with a leftover vertical speedo.

        JR,

Here is a NOS speedo, the face does have a bluish tint to it.

I guess this is the Vertical style with the riveted face.

Here is a faded Chief type, with the screwed on face, the numbers appear bluish….

        Hope this helps.

You will also notice the odometer cutout is just a square punch out in first op pic while the nos shows a inward bend to frame the hole.
