    Hi,
Lead/acid batteries (original style) tend to tolerate various charging rates and charging voltages better than modern batteries. If you are going to consider a modern style battery (non-lead/acid), you should probably consider running a solid-state regulator, which controls voltage better than the third brush style original generator. A good place to start is; http://www.splitdorfreg.com/ Converting the third brush generator to a shunt-wound generator with electronic regulation will enhance both modern battery life and generator output.
