Oil drain 1941 Scout

Ok more questions and could not Google great answers.

I saw the youtube video on the oil change for the 46 Chief.

I pull the bottom main plug and got about 8 oz of oil out. Do I need to pul the plug on the tank to drain that or is there a lower plug that would be less messy?

Where do you fill the engine or do you?

Any help is much appreciated trying to change fluids be for I attempt to start the "new to me" scout.

I put a funnel under the tank when I drain - still messy. Slush the tank out with some Kerosene, let it drain and in goes the new oil. The oil pump should take care of the motor and fill it to the correct level. When you start it, check the return tube. With the oil cap off you should see oil returning to the tank, about like a percolator. If not after a couple minutes, try filling the return tube and try again. If still none, check your engine. Sometimes they will wet sump - especially after sitting and not being ridden. If it does, just drain the engine again and try it again, usually they well start pumping just fine. Also a good idea to lift the oil cap just a bit when ever you start the machine for the first time of the day, just to check that its returning ok. If it wet sumps bad, it will smoke like hell and even stop running. But, that rarely happens.I believe the top plug is the correct level for oil and the bottom is for draining, Have fun and be safe. Let us know how it goes. Oh yes, git a shop manual, all the Indian dealer's have them for that machine.

Tom Thanks. So don't fill in either of the large ports with the screw diver slot caps? Just the tank itself?
I assume the one on the outer housing is for the secondary and transmission? I drained them both as well.

Hi,

What I usually do is, with the bike on the center stand (if you don't have a center stand ensure you raise the rear tire about an inch of the ground using a jack) close the bottom hole and use an oil spout can to fill until oil starts dropping out of the upper hole. It does not take much oil in the engine crankcase (approximately 4-6 ounces). Also to make draining oil a little easier I replaced my drain plug on the main oil tank with the following:

You can but an oil/fuel rated rubber hose from your local part store to attach to the other end for a clean drain :-).

The outer housing caps are for the primary, not sure if the primary/transmission on a 41 scout as set up the same way as a 46 chief, so will let the gurus respond to that question.

Yes, fill the primary too - there's a correct level plug some where near the clutch. Fill till oil starts coming out the little hole then put screw back in. That should take care of your trans too - if it has not been sealed to run a different oil ? lot's of folks do that. Good idea what Sunny said too, you could put some in the bottom end. I think the trans has a drain plug, you could pull that and then when you fill the primary, watch to see if oil starts coming out the trans. That will tell you if it's be altered? I am no expert by a long shot, just been playing with Indians awhile now :-) Don't forget the manual. I have a bit's of 14 v twin project, a 25 Scout, a 40 bits of Sport Scout - which I love to pieces and have been riding for over 24 years, and a 27 Henderson Deluxe and my newest project - like I need another. A 101 Chout with a highly modified 47 Chief engine.

A good friend who drank more beer than I did told me (after I experimented with home-made funnels, petcocks/hoses, etc), .. "a 12-pack carton works just great!"
and that's how I do it 20 years later.
