I know they like to retard the exhaust, and advance the intake, so that you have on overlap of the two. However, the followers were the ticket to changing valve timing with the standard cam lobes, because the rear cam (and gear) ran both intake and exhaust, and the front cam (and gear) ran the front intake and exhaust.

actually, I remember our late, great Indian Guru Francis "Cliff" Clifford telling us about a set of cams that needed to be set up one tooth off in order to work. I forget the details, and wouldn't remember them if you told me, but I do remember Cliff telling us about them, and chuckling. Sounds like the degree wheel is in order!
