  • 1941 style horn

    Hola Indian aficionados,

I was looking for verification of something. I have 3 different faces for the 1941 style horn.

This is correct for the civilian 1941 - 1945 bikes:

This version, with WARDS is for another application that I don’t know (automotive?)

And the blank one, I was told, is for the Indian military bikes 741, 640B, and 340B.

The picture I posted in the old photos section shows 12 guys on 640Bs and their horns appear to be blank.

Just looking for some confirmation that the blank horn face is the military application.

    Thanks, Joe

One thing I noticed on the 3 horn faces you post, Joe; is the tool and die work is most defined, and sharp on the first 'civilian' horn face. I wonder if Indian made the initial tooling, or if it was farmed out to a horn manufacturer who maximized profit by modifying the original tooling? Another thing I noticed in the 'yard long' pic you posted was the front brake handles on the Military models. One has the earlier curved handle, and most have the later handle.

      Eric,
I’m sure the stamping was farmed out, and the lack of sharpness can be attributed to the layers of silver paint on the WARDS and plain faces.
As far as the brake levers, judging by the busted headlight on the one bike and the crumpled fenders on a lot of the others they probably broke more then a few levers during training. I thought the picture was neat cause of the 640Bs, not WLAs that you would expect.
