  • Voltage Regulator

Hello all, asking for any advice on sourcing a solid state voltage regulator 6v negative ground I can hide inside an Indian vertical voltage regulator. The one I found requires the field coils in the generator to be rewired. I’d rather not do that.

        Howdy sir,

If your generator is in stock three brush configuration you’ll have to convert it to two brush. Not difficult, a search on this forum will provide instructions. Many years ago I adapted Bob Kizer’s superb PODtronics regulator to work on an Autolite. All my Indians have, and others, run on these without fail for years. He’s since retired and his business sold to Coventry Spares at the link below. Fuse at 15amps on the positive side, no HD circuit breakers on the ground strap.

            Jim,
Did you get the solid state regulator sorted out yet?

Hi Jason, I actually found a couple NOS regulators that might work. I’m having my core regulator cad plated and we’ll decide what direction to go down the road.

The Vertical generators are 2 brush which eliminates need for 3 to 2 brush conversion of gen. A few years ago I converted one of my 249 Scouts to electronic and run a Shorai battery so if you decide to go that route, shoot me a PM. But yea, typically owners of these bikes don't ride them much and if that will be the case if you can get a mechanical regulator to work it might be best route.
Are you still running the magneto for the ignition?

Hi Jason, I am running the magneto. I’ll ride it a fair bit and would like to have a good charging system. Ideally if the regulator I found won’t work I’ll go electronic.
