  • Indian motorcycle horns

I was looking over some of my Indian motorcycle horns and I have a question. I have an original Indian horn, it is early because the cover has a rolled edge over the horn body:

And I have a made up later horn where the face is attached to the horn with screws:

And yes the horn body’s are different, the later one with the screw on face is an Auto-Lite, while the earlier horn has no markings. My question is when did Indian switch from the rolled edge horn to the screwed on cover?

I looked in Hatfields restoration guide but could find no information on the change. The only thing I could go by is the pictures.

In this picture (photo credit to Hatfield) of a 1936 Four the back of the horn appears smooth, no screws.

In this picture (photo credit to Hatfield) of a 1937 Chief I think I see screws there. I know these Indian publicity photos were airbrushed, but this is the only evidence I see in Hatfields book. I looked in the 1940 parts book (covers 1936 - 1940) and it only lists one horn, so maybe the change happened in 1935? Any guesses out there?

Do either of your horns have a patent number and the words "other pending" along the bottom edge of the face? Thank you.

        Hey,
Yes they do. The original horn with the rolled over edge has the “REISSUE PAT NO 17.560”. “OTHERS PENDING “ stamp on the bottom….

        So does the later one….

But that one is an older repop, I think from Timmerman in Germany.

The early horn was also sold as "Moto-Vox" with a different face and different stud pattern. It was used on 1931-1933 Indians. In case it is available for sale, I am interested.

gsottl, not right now. My father has a 31 101 he was working on, I don’t know what horn he has for that one but from your info this is correct for that bike. I’ll let you know if I decide to let it go……Thanks for the information.
