440 conversion back to magneto

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difficulty and what would be necessary (as well as the likely cost...) to convert a 440 'M' engine back to its original magneto configuration from the current generator? Many thanks in advance.

Howdy Keith,

Doing this from memory so a bit sketchy, been a while since I worked on a mag machine but one thing you want to check at the outset before undertaking this project is that the mag/generator pad wasn’t modified to accommodate that battery ignition conversion. Look at your generator clamp where it mounts to the pad, if it has a front lip the length of the bottom of the face of the bracket overhanging the front of the pad then someone trimmed the pad back as the mag version is longer in the front. If your lucky then they will have trimmed this lip off and left the pad alone. Will a mag mount securely to a trimmed pad, can’t recall.
