  • Chief Girder Front End

Any veteran Chief restorers out there that may have a trick up their sleeve for installing the upper and lower fork spring perches onto the front fork springs? It seems to be quite a wrestling match with nowhere to get a good grip on the parts.

    Girder fork springs..

When I put mine together, I put the bolt in first, put a little bit of grease on the channel in the spring mounts, put the spring on, held the mount with channel-lock pliers (jaws covered in duct tape), and twisted it counter-clockwise. Tightening the bolt was another deal, but once you get the lockwasher set, it should tighten right up. If the leading edge of the spring is sharp and digging into the mount and keeping it from turning, you can grind the edge just a little bit. Make sure you have the rubber dampers in place before you put it together. Bones, '46 Chief '47 FL

      Hey Bones47FL,
Thanks for the advice. I will check the spring ends and smooth them out some more.
