  • 1953 Compensator sprocket removal

    I am pulling the primary case off my 1953 Roadmaster. My old manual does not cover the compensating sprocket.

    I have removed what looks like a jam nut on the outside of the assembly.

    Can anybody give me a step-by-step for removal and assembly?

    Also, any parts drawings, exploded style like parts catalog have, would be helpful.

    Hi Tom.
    I have the 80 manual supplement down in my garage.
    I'm a bit crook to go looking for it tonight (got the flu), but I'll get it and post the info re removal, and scan any relevant pages for you tomorrow.
    You should also try the Virtual Indian web group for a faster reply if needed.

      80 Compensator disassembly

      G'day Tom.
      Apologies mate. I went to my garage and my manual (a new version of the old one) doesn't explain disassembly / assembly.
      As suggested, try the Virtual Indian group for rapid informed reply.
      I have a diagram of the assembly in my manual. If you want a copy, let me know and I'll scan it for you.
      Kiwi has also just released a DVD on the lower end of the Chief. May have content re the torque evener.

        I would like a good, clean scan of the compensator assembly.

        I'm due for a Kiwi order. I'll probably get that DVD.

        Now to find a 2 1/4" wrench.....

                Mission complete.

                The inner primary came off, has been resealed with Loctitie 599, and is now assembled.

                    update:

                    Got the primary chain, with the sprocket & clutch basket, along with the transmission mainshaft, pulled out.

                    AHA! The last three screws to remove the inner primary case. Off they come, along with the case.

                    A little lacquer thinner to clean things up, a swipe of Loctite 599n the mating surfaces, and I put the mess back together.

                    Add oil to the primary--VOILA!--no drip.

                    Mission complete.
