  • Speedometer drive tabs and rear wheel hub alignment

Changed out my rear tire, tube and rim strip on my 1946 Chief: Realigned wheels and adjusted rear chain. Took for a ride today and all is GOOD.
Except my speedometer drive tabs must not be properly mounted on rear wheel hub as speedometer not working and it did before tire/tube change.
Any tips for getting speedometer drive tabs where they need to be? Is it easier to disconnect the speedometer drive from the speedometer cable?
Kind of tight with valanced fenders. Thanks In Advance.

Paul, with the Chief on the center stand or otherwise with the rear wheel off the ground, loosen the axle bolt enough so that you can slightly rotate the left side spring/axle casting away from the wheel hub. Then get close enough so you can actually see the speedo drive tabs and the notches in the hub ...and then turn the wheel until the tabs line up with the notches in the hub. Tighten the axle nut then take a look again, and you should be set!

FWIW I had two broken tabs once...so check that drive washer to make certain both tabs are good.

(#10 got flattened) Same thing happened to me about 10 years ago. Ruined these two parts. Replaced them and carefully re-assembled. OK ever since. Grease it up good.

            "Ruined these two parts"

            Deebs!

Had that happen to me when #11 in Geer diagram or #1 in Kiwi diagram failed. It was original round wire 'spring clip" (?). Lost it's 'poop'/tension 9or I didn't get it seared properly) I like Geers wide flat version better.
