  • 1937 Chief Rear Wheel Bearing Nut

    Hi,
Is the rear wheel bearing nut on a 37 Chief RH or LH thread?
    Thanks!

Oh Boy an easy one I can answer:

    Looks like LH See Geers:

Thanks! I was just wanting to make sure that wasn't a typo. As I was turning it clockwise to loosen, it seemed to be tightening and getting harder to turn.

Sounds like you might have a cross threaded nut and or drum. Usually both are damaged. The nut is no problem. As mentioned , Greer has them. Damaged threads in the drum is a different story. I made a "chasing tap" out of a good nut by cutting four slots in the threads and welded a bar across it to turn it. With patience and some cutting oil and valve grinding compound you may be able to save the drum threads.

The hub is rh, drum is lh .The threads can be damaged from the set screws .

Thanks for the input! It's the wheel hub bearing nut that I'm trying to remove. I'll give it another try knowing it's RH thread.

It may do less damage being removed if you use a drill that just fits in set screw hole, without touching threads ,and drill slightly into the rut to remove the flattened over threads, then unscrew.

Thanks for all the help and advice! I was able to finally get the nut removed. Another question now that the nut is off......The outer roller bearing thrust washer retainer appears to be pressed onto the inner roller bearing support and I'm unable to remove the spacers from the wheel in either direction. Is there a trick to removing this retainer off the bearing support or removing the spacers? Thanks for helping with these basic questions, my other Chiefs are 46 & 47's, so the 37 design is unfamiliar to me.
                Thanks!
