Anyone have any tips or tricks for getting the Primary Chain tension right?
    I know the manual says:

"When properly adjusted, the chain should have an "up and down" play of 3/8" or the distance equal to HALF the diameter of the inspection hole".

But, every year I go through doubting myself and second guessing. Thanks in advance.

Its important to rotate the chain and find any tight spot.
If you put bike in gear ,preferably with rear wheel off the ground, some pressure on the wheel forward will put the slack on top to see from the hole.Adjust at the tight spot,

If you rotate the wheel, make sure the spark plugs are out of it so you can turn the engine over easily.

A little loose is better than too tight with any chain adjustment. There is no cush drive on these Chiefs (until 1950) so pull in the clutch when you feel those gears bouncing going slow down a hill. It's about the most annoying thing about the bike but you learn to compensate for it.
