  • change coil in rm mag on chief

does anyone know if it is possible to change the coil in a rm2 mag on a 46 chief without removing it?

Yes you can, but it's better if done with the mag removed. Remove the distributor cap, next the top cap, both Bakelite. The top cap covers the coil. Disconnect the wire, remove 2 screws and it will lift off. Easy enough to drop another in it's place and reconnect. Might work but the process of removing the coil breaks the magnetic field of the rotating magnet, basically removing the keeper, which should never be done to a magnet, less the strength of the field is reduced significantly.

The ideal situation is to remove the mag, replace the coil, service the bearings and everything else at that tme and reassemble. Then, once completely assembled, recharge the magnet with the coil in place. When removed from the charger, the coil acts as a keeper and the magnet will hold all of the charge, making for easier starting and an all around hotter spark.

With all that said, and assuming the magnet was charged correctly and fully last time it was taken apart, you could try and fashion a keeper that would connect the iron poles that the coil sits on and attach it BEFORE removing the coil. Replace the coil, THEN remove the keeper.
