346 starter crank spring

on my 346 indian, can anyone tell me why my starter crank (kick starter) return spring keeps coming off for no apparent reason! it was replaced with a new one last year so it should be good. doesn't seem to make any difference which way you wind it up, it still falls off.

The holes are probably worn large and the ends are cocking and slipping out.
