My friend and I both are restoring our respective Indians, mine a Chief and my friends, a Sport Scout. After much discussion about different model machines and the variety of applications of the Autolite Distributor, the question is what is the correct letter/number designation for the respective model ?
I have found quite bit of info on the generators, including years, models, and correct applications. So far, nothing about the distributors, also made by Autolite. IBW 4053 seems to be found on most of what I have actually seen. I have also seen other letter/number combinations on a few other specimens. Long shaft Dist. and 4-cly Dist are exceptions and would likely have a different tag stamp.
I guess the bottom line is, most Indian distributors are interchangable, how do I know which tag stamp on the Distributor is right for my chief ?
