    1949 Indian Chief

I recently came across a for sale ad for a 1949 Indian Chief.
The serial number is supposed to be "CVH 3xxx B".
I have always heard that Indian did not make any Chief Motorcycles for model year 1949, just
the new Brit style bikes. I cannot find any info on serial numbers for those bikes.
Can anybody help with some info?
    Thank you.

Many many years ago before ebay existed and we found things in Hemmings there was an auction in PA. If I remember correctly (and I could very well be wrong) the name of the shop was "Indian Reservation" from "Becktelville??? and the owners name was Glen H????. He had a 1949 Chief for sale and it was the only one I ever heard of and I cannot verify if it was the real thing or not as i never saw it??? I remember getting a 50 Chief that came from that auction second hand. That Ind Res name jog anybodies memory?? I knew a few or 3 people who knew of the shop but I can't contact them to jog their memories as they are all dead now. 46EL

The existence of a 1949 Chief has always been a speculative topic. Just like non available colors, unusual options, or plating finishes on H-Ds or Indians. You need factory, or dealer documentation to verify the truth. In lieu of real documentation, you're just taking someone's word for it. I'll always remember a B.S. artist telling me his uncle had a '49 Chief, in the factory shipping crate (who's Uncle didn't?). Still, I don't doubt that Indian could have sold, and stamped a '48 Chief in 1949 for a favored dealer. Real documentation is what it would take to convince the skeptics.

There was 1 ( supposedly, I couldn't read the numbers behind the ropes) at Space Farm Museum in Sussex , NJ back in the early 90's. Might still be there
