  • Torque specs

This may help some but it's not complete.
I don't have time to search the poor "Forum Search Tab" for torque specs so here's what I know and if I've missed some (which I have) please let us know.
    Head Bolts 50-55 Ft Lbs
Cylinder Base Nuts 35 Ft Lbs
    Drive Sprocket 100 Ft Lbs
Engine Case Nuts 35 Ft Lbs

    Hey John
Where did you get the engine case nuts spec? And probably the cylinder base nuts and the head bolts too?
35 ft lbs is much too much for the 5/16" Grade 2 bolts use there. I'm pretty sure that it's too high for the cylinder nuts too. I once, and can't quickly find, saw a figure of 45 ft lbs for head bolts. I think Chuck Myles had that info

      Hi Bob
Engine case nuts may be a steel torque; not for aluminum.
Cylinder Base nuts is a calculated guess as I'm not able to get a torque wrench in there so I make them tight.
Head bolt torque comes from Repair and Overhaul Manual, page 7. The Pinion shaft (into the flywheel) nut is on page 14, 100 Ft Lbs.
I would like to know the torque for the pinion shaft 5/8" nut that holds the oil pump gear, also the left hand threaded Main shaft nut.
      Thanks for your response.

          You are right John,
Head bolts 50-55 ft lbs on page 7
Drive sprocket 100 ft lbs on page39
I couldn't find anything on the base or case bolts. I am pretty sure you are right on them though!

Hi Ron and anyone else interested,
Here is some good info about nut torque specs:
            For steel:
            1/4" 7~10 ftlbs
            5/16" 15~23 ft lbs
            3/8" 25~40 ft lbs
            7/16" 40~60 ft lbs
            1/2" 50~75 ft lbs
Threads into aluminum, 2 x diameter of bolt
All steel, into aluminum, reduce by 30~40%
