Rear Shock Absorber Interchange

Are all Rear RH & LH shock absorbers the same from 1940-1953? Are there any mounting changes or noticeable differences from year to year? Can rear shocks on a twin cylinder be used on a four cylinder?
Any info would be appreciated.

1940-1945 and change 1946 to 1953 parts cannot be intermixed ,4 and chief same .
