  • 1947 Chief front wheel install

I'm hopeing someone could someone tell me the correct procedure, possibly step by step for installing the front wheel on my 47 chief. I know this may seem simple to some but this is my first attempt at doing this and I am having a difficult time. I had the wheel off to replace the brakes and front bearing. I now have it back together and the brake assembly mounted to the wheel to install it. The hollow axle is in place extending thru the backing plate. The problem I am having is I cannot get the hollow axle back to into position in the fork without having to force it. I was using the solid axle to tap the hollow axle into the fork and this is causing damage to the bearing and retaining nut.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yo. Attach the backing plate and drum to the fork. Then let all the air out of the tire and squeeze it in. Tight but goes.

When following above instructions, if you are still having problems getting the sleeve/bearing race started into the fork, you can spread the fork opening up (carefully) by inserting an appropriate size screw driver in the pinch slot as a wedge. Shouldn't take much. Everything should go together without beating using some patience and finesse
