I'll tell ya from recent personal experience, to go with as new a drum as possible. years ago I had a truck brake shop make Oversize linings, which they stock, to get my Chief rear drum ( about +.040")usable. Standard thickness linings had much too much play. It was the usual, barely works, drum brake. I broke the drum, ripped the whole center out, showing a EVO my a** and elbows last year. I bought a new drum, and new shoes barely fit in and WOW, works like car disc brakes. The slightest touch does something, while it used to be on or off.
