  • Chief crankshaft and wheel hub roller retainers

Curious. Does anyone or everyone, interchange the Indian roller retainers #27B181 and #704001? I found a couple of the 1946-53 wheel retainers (704001) in my pile of engine retainers ,(27B181) and even though I separate them, I wonder if someone before me didn't. The 27B181 retainers are a tad bigger OD and about .030" larger ID. I get 1.045" ID average on the wheel retainers, (704001) and about 1.075" ID in the crank pin retainers, (27B181). The crank pin is 1" and the hollow axle is .984" which is why there's 2 different ones.

Good topic! I'll have to check on those dim's.
While we're on the subject, would someone comment on rust pits (cleaned up, of course), and aluminum retainers? I've never feared a few cavities, but don't recall using aluminum retainers. Have seen some that were "twisted".

      They don't interchange!
You will lock up your wheels or your bottom end.
That's why when we make our new cages - We laser etch the part number so there is no mistake. They are so close in size many people just count the 12 roller slots and assume they are the same!
